Episode 4: Yokel Schmokel

Maria joins Amanda and Liz this week to give the sound booth a bit of color. Amanda is sick of Fundamentalist Constitution-humpers, including bigoted judges and Brokeback militia members. Liz ponders the treatment (or lack thereof) of female victims of sex crimes, particularly in the documentary ‘Making a Murderer’. Everyone wonders why #WasteHisTime2016 is a thing, and just when Amanda will start stalking her girl crush, SchumLaw.

The “Carol” Oscars Snub: The Problem Isn’t Lesbians, It’s Misandry | Autostraddle

By Amanda B.

I haven’t seen Carol yet, but completely get the point the author makes here. As we see this year and in past seasons, the Oscars have become less a showcase for spectacular films, and more a mirror for the Academy members.

Jennifer Lawrence Speaks Up on Planned Parrenthood

By Amanda B.

When the Planned Parenthood shooting took place last year, I wondered how we could possibly be in this place in the year 2015. The deadly shooting was the climax of a year-long attack on reproductive rights by anti-choice groups and their Congressional cronies. In fact, as of today, President Obama had to veto yet another bill from the Republican Congress that would defund Planned Parenthood and limit their ability to provide quality healthcare for American women.

A tiny ray of good news did surface today, however. In an interview with Glamour magazine, actor (and my internet girlfriend) Jennifer Lawrence describes the important role that Planned Parenthood played in her life.

“Because Planned Parenthood is so much more [than abortion]. My mom was really religious with me when I was young. She’s not so much anymore. And I wouldn’t have been able to get birth control if it weren’t for Planned P. I wouldn’t have been able to get condoms and birth control and all these things I needed as a normal teenager who was growing up in a Jesus house.”

As someone who also grew up in a “Jesus house”, I can’t help but think that if I had been able to go to a Planned Parenthood as a teenager, and had access to birth control and sex education, maybe my abortion could have been avoided.

Hey, we have this podcast thing

41382485_mlSo after years of bitching about various things having to do with feminism, religion, and politics, my friends – in what I’m sure was an effort to stop me from gumming up their Facebook feeds with angry rants – encouraged me to start a podcast. And after some stops and starts, and an ongoing struggle with technology, it is here: Debbie Doubters.

I was joined by one of my best friends and fellow mouthy broad, Liz. We’re on episode two, with one “in the can” (as the professionals like to say), and we’re still finding our footing. We want to cover serious topics about equality, civil rights, and politics, without taking ourselves too seriously. Important stories… with the occasional poop or dick joke. Because we’re not NPR, people.

So, with that said – I hope you enjoy. Our dozen of listeners seem to think it’s good, and that’s good enough for me.
